Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Please join us March 27-30 for our Forum entitled "The role of economics in mitigating unsustainability of fisheries: Dealing with ecosystems, environmental fluctuations, governance, and trade". This is the second call for abstracts for the fourth Form of the North American Association of Fisheries Economists (NAAFE). The Forum follows successful prior NAAFE events held in New Orleans, Virginia, and Vancouver Canada.
NAAFE's upcoming forum will be organized by Dr. Juan Carlos Seijo of the Universidad Marista de Merida (UMM) and will be comprised of 2 1/2 days of conference sessions plus a one day post-conference tour to a fishing port on the nearby Yucatan coast. An optional pre-conference workshop on Spatial Bioeconomic Analysis of Coastal Fisheries will be offered March 27.
Conference themes include:
- Economics of ecosystem-based fisheries management
- Spatial modeling and management of metapopulations
- Bioeconomics of marine protected areas, MPAs.
- Decision theory and uncertain fisheries environments
- Fisheries governance: high seas, regional fisheries organizations and coastal artisanal fisheries
- Rights-based fisheries: co-management, community-based management and ITQs
- Current fishery management issues: restructuring, and buyback controls
- Valuation of ecosystem services and biodiversity
- Valuation of recreational fisheries
- Economic effects of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing
- Aquaculture: bioeconomics of aquaculture, productivity, risk, and uncertainty
- Trade, traceability, and marketing of fisheries and aquaculture products

We invite you to thoroughly examine the website which provides a great deal of useful information provided by Dr. Seijo and his excellent team at UMM. The Yucatan peninsula will provide conference participants not only with a host of interesting fisheries issues set in the unique eco- and social systems of the Gulf of Mexico, but also with ample opportunities for tourism before and after the Forum itself.
Please submit your abstract as soon as possible, at the latest by the deadline of December 8, 2006.
